HOW AN APICOECTOMY WORKS

Sometimes, getting a root canal isn’t enough to save the tooth. When this happens, you may require surgery. Surgical treatment is usually only necessary when conventional, non-surgical root canal therapy has not been successful.

Our skilled endodontists will first evaluate the infected tooth using our high-powered microscopes and 3 dimensional x-rays, which allows us to see the inside of your tooth in great detail. This advanced technology greatly improves our diagnostic accuracy and the precision at which we perform the surgical correction. The surgery involves opening up the gum tissue to remove any infected or inflamed tissue around the bone. Next, the very end of the tooth root is removed. The root canal is filled to seal the end of the root and a few stitches will be placed in the tissue. The soft tissue heals quickly and the sutures are removed as soon as two days later. The bone around the end of the tooth root heals over a period of a few months and any tooth pain dissipates shortly after surgery.
