Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people delay or completely avoid necessary dental treatment, and root canals carry more of this fear than almost any other procedure. At St. Petersburg Endodontics, we have worked with anxious patients for over 40 years, and we want to be direct: the fear is almost always worse than the reality of treatment.
That said, we also know that telling someone “don’t worry” isn’t enough. That’s why we offer multiple sedation options and a full comfort menu designed specifically to make your visit as relaxed and manageable as possible, regardless of how anxious you feel.
Why do people fear root canals specifically?
The root canal’s fearsome reputation is largely a relic. Stories passed down from parents and grandparents, who may have had root canals performed before modern anesthesia and endoscopic techniques, have shaped a perception of the procedure that no longer reflects reality.
Studies consistently show that patients who have experienced a root canal rate it as no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. The patients most surprised by this are often those who came in the most afraid.
Still, dental anxiety is real and valid. It doesn’t always stem from rational calculation; in fact, for many people, it’s a visceral response to the dental environment itself: the sounds, the chair, the instruments, the feeling of vulnerability. Understanding that is exactly why we approach anxious patients differently.
Your sedation options at St. Petersburg Endodontics
Local anesthesia is the foundation of comfortable care
Every procedure at our office begins with local anesthesia, which numbs the tooth and surrounding tissue completely. Dr. Hedrick uses refined injection techniques refined over four decades of practice to make numbing as comfortable as possible. Most patients are surprised by how little they feel.
An important note: one of the reasons anxious patients sometimes have painful experiences is that achieving complete numbness in an infected, inflamed tooth is genuinely more challenging than numbing a healthy tooth. Endodontists are specifically trained in supplemental anesthetic techniques to address this. If you feel any discomfort at any point, we stop and give more anesthetic.
Nitrous oxide – fast-acting, fast-fading relaxation
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a safe and widely used sedation option that helps patients feel calm and at ease during treatment. We place a small mask over your nose and you breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen throughout the procedure.
The effects begin within a few minutes and fade quickly once the mask is removed. Most patients are fully alert within 5 minutes of finishing treatment and can drive themselves home. Nitrous oxide is a great option for patients who are moderately anxious and want to take the edge off without deeper sedation.
Oral sedation – deeper relaxation for high-anxiety patients
For patients with significant dental anxiety, we can prescribe an oral anti-anxiety medication to be taken approximately one hour before your appointment. You arrive already relaxed, and the medication keeps you calm and drowsy throughout the procedure, though you remain conscious and responsive.
Because oral sedation affects coordination and alertness, you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment. The effects typically wear off within a few hours.
Our comfort menu – the little things that make a big difference
Beyond sedation, we have built an environment and approach specifically designed for anxious patients. Our comfort menu includes a range of complimentary amenities we encourage patients to ask about when scheduling. Over the years, we have found that it is often the small details – feeling heard, being given control, having a moment to breathe – that make the biggest difference for nervous patients.
Dr. Hedrick himself will take time before your procedure to explain exactly what he will do, step by step, so there are no surprises. You are always in control and can signal us to pause at any time.
What if my anxiety is severe? Can I still be treated?
Yes. Dr. Hedrick and our team have extensive experience with patients who have avoided dental care for years, even decades, due to anxiety. There is no judgment here, only practical problem-solving. We will work with you to find the combination of sedation and communication style that makes treatment possible.
It is also worth noting that delaying treatment for an infected tooth does not make things easier; it allows the infection to spread and the eventual treatment to become more complex. Getting the care you need now, even if it requires a little extra preparation, is almost always better for your health and your peace of mind in the long run.

Frequently asked questions
Will I be unconscious with sedation?
No. Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation are forms of conscious sedation. You remain awake and able to respond, but feel significantly more relaxed and calm. General anesthesia is not used for root canals.
Is sedation safe?
Yes. Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation have long safety records when administered by trained professionals. Dr. Hedrick will review your medical history before recommending any sedation option to ensure it is appropriate for you.
How do I ask about sedation when scheduling?
Simply mention when you call that you experience dental anxiety and our team will walk you through your options. There is no extra judgment or paperwork hurdle. We want to make your visit possible.
What if I start to panic during the procedure?
We establish a signal, typically a raised hand, before the procedure begins. The moment you give that signal, we stop immediately. You are never trapped or rushed.
